At BT People we are here to help you in every way possible as you search for your next step in your IT/ERP career.
We recommend contacting BT People for consultation and advice as you approach your next step however below are a few general tips and some advice to help you prepare.
Resume Tips
- Prior to writing or updating a resume consider the type of role you would be seeking. It’s not a case of one size fits all and how you present your resume will have a strong impact on the prospective employer who reads it
- Select the categories / subheadings you would like to use in your resume before you enter your experience. Consider what order in your resume you believe they should appear, putting yourself in the shoes of the prospective employer and what they would be looking for first
- Provide a clear objective at the start of the resume to define what the reader should expect by reading further. This is generally a single paragraph which acts as an executive summary to entice the reader to continue
- If you are going to be applying to a variety of different roles, consider having different versions to present for each type of role
- Ensure that your resume is formatted in a clear and concise manner. Large amounts of text are hard to read and can be confusing to the reader. Well titled sections, bullet points and correct spacing makes a resume a pleasure to read
- Avoid inclusion of details such as Date of Birth, Age, Ethnic background, Photo’s and other such information which could lead to discriminatory assessment of your resume. It’s unfortunate, but it does still happen out there
- Remember that your resume is there to provide enough information to make the reader want to interview you. The resume does not need to tell every detail of your life story!
Cover Letter Tips
- If you choose to provide a cover letter with your application, keep it concise and to the point
- Make sure your cover letter is correctly addressed for the company you are applying for
- Make sure the cover letter correctly references the position you are applying for
- Use the cover letter to (in a concise way) describe why your resume will be relevant to the position you are applying for
- Remember the cover letter is to support the reading of your resume, not replace the resume itself
